Technical Discovery Principal

London, England, United Kingdom · 1

As Technical Discovery Principal you will lead the development and growth of ustwo London’s technical discovery and creative technology practices, including prototyping, proofs of concept and technical architecture. You will work directly on discovery projects and also support other ustwobies in doing so.

Lead the development and refinement of our ways of working and tools for the technical aspects of discovery projects, in collaboration with appropriate teams and individual ustwobies. Help us to develop a flexible, coherent, consistent and current practice that follows industry best practices or sets us apart from our competition when appropriate. Be a domain expert in the creative use of technology to uncover and capture value for our clients.

Ensure all discovery projects that include a technical component are set up for success and the teams running those projects feel supported and well equipped to deliver with confidence and impact. Work directly on key discovery projects (leading or supporting), aiming for a billable utilisation target of at least 50%. You will be expected to be able to work directly on multiple projects as well as supporting other projects. The project work will span all aspects of technical discovery, from prototyping to proofs of concepts and ideation, all the way up to full technical audits, technical architecture recommendations and infrastructure sizing.

You will be expected to contribute to all aspects of the discovery phase, including user & stakeholder interviews, business model input, interpretation of the brief and creative ideation, and support other members of the technical team in doing so when they are directly involved.

Ensure that the people you are responsible for are appropriately supported. Help them to maximise the value of their development opportunities (Peer coaching, training budget etc.), ensure that they are appropriately compensated for their efforts, that they have everything they need to succeed at ustwo and that they are supported in their progression at ustwo. Supporting the People Team with activities like pay reviews, challenging conversations etc., and also contributing to workforce planning, hiring and ‘Black Book’ upkeep as relating to your area of practice.

Develop a thriving, self driving community around your area of practice within ustwo, as well as being a key external voice for ustwo (networking, speaking opportunities etc.) where applicable.

About you

We expect you to have a wide experience of development. You’ll have an expertise in at least one platform and hopefully a more general understanding of others.

If you don’t already have a deep understanding of how modern mobile applications are built, tested and distributed – whether native or web based – then this will be something you’re excited to immerse yourself in with appropriate support.

You’ll be open-minded about the best technology to solve a given problem. We work on native mobile apps as well as websites, so we’d expect you to be enthusiastic working with Android, iOS and web. That doesn’t mean you need to be expert in all of them, but if you have a philosophical preference for one platform over others then this opportunity is probably not for you.

We’re looking for someone who is excited to support a team of technologists. Preferably you’re experienced in management, even if it is at a less senior level. You may have been supporting people as a mentor or in a senior technical role on projects. We’re ready for this to be a step up for you and we will support you every step of the way.

Regardless of experience, you must be equally able to inspire and challenge. We have a very supportive culture, and part of that is knowing when and how to have a difficult conversation. These are difficult skills and instincts to learn and even harder to master, so in a way we consider all leaders in the business to be a work in progress.

You’ll have experience working with modern tooling, for example dependency management, as well as an advocate for appropriate automation and you will know how to support teams in making the hard trade-offs.

While it’s not necessary for you to have worked in an agency environment, you will have a keen commercial sense and will be comfortable presenting to audiences of all seniorities, including very senior technical and non-technical stakeholders. You’ll know how to communicate difficult technical and non-technical concepts in an engaging and comprehensible way.
