Head of Engineering
ustwo London is looking for a Head of Engineering! This is a pivotal role in the studio and of vital importance to our technical team.
Who are we
We work on projects that make a meaningful impact to our clients, their customers, and the world. We work very hard to win interesting and challenging projects. Many of our client relationships span multiple years and projects. We work across the project lifecycle, from highly strategic discovery work to large-scale build projects and everything in between.
We also have a longstanding tradition of investing in our own products and joint ventures for fun, profit and learning. Examples include DICE, Moodnotes, PAUSE and non-profits like Wayfindr.
Our teams work in a collaborative cross-discipline environment where everyone is responsible for quality, and hence encouraged to look beyond their immediate role.
It’s also great fun working at ustwo. We have a very warm and welcoming culture. We are a very transparent company and work hard to distribute leadership across the studio.
We are an equal opportunity employer and very much value diversity and inclusion. We believe diverse teams help us make better products and we actively hire for cultural growth. We seek people of all ages, stories and backgrounds.
We offer a competitive package and benefits, including outstanding family policies.
The Head of Engineering reports to the Technical Director, James Higgs. The working relationship between these two roles is extremely close and collaborative. In general, the Technical Director takes a strategic and studio leadership role, while the Head of Engineering takes a more project focused role. Both roles have the support of people at their core.
To be more specific, the Head of Engineering role has the following main responsibilities:
People – you’ll be helping to support a team of technologists who span Android, iOS, Web, QA and Data Science. The team is around 30 people strong.
You’ll be helping them maximise the value of their development opportunities, ensuring that they are appropriately compensated for their efforts, and that they have everything they need to succeed at ustwo. You’ll be supporting them in their career development and personal progression.
We’ll expect you to bring exceptional people skills, because we are nothing without great people. The challenge we face is to support, develop and retain the great people we have, and to hire great new people who can help us grow and improve. This is the single most important aspect of the role.
Projects – we work on challenging and diverse projects for an exceptional portfolio of clients. We also work on our own products. The quality of our technical delivery across all of the platforms we develop for is something that we are very proud of and that we have worked hard to achieve.
A big part of the role will be helping teams to deliver on projects. This will involve technical oversight, stakeholder engagement, ways of working support and casting. You’ll be experienced in Agile methodologies to the point of understanding their trade offs and suitability for different scenarios, and you’ll work closely with our Coaching team to ensure that our projects are set up for success (you can read more about ustwo's coaching approach in our blog post).
Practice – you’ll be leading the development and refinement of our ways of working and tools for technical project delivery, in collaboration with other discipline heads and coaches. You will help to develop an effective, flexible, coherent, consistent and current practice. You’ll be aware of new technologies, techniques and approaches in the industry and will know how (and whether) to apply them to our work. You’ll drive our own practice forward and share what we’ve learned with the community.
Please take the time to read ustwo’s cultural manifesto [PDF].
We expect you to have a wide experience of development. You’ll have an expertise in at least one platform and hopefully a more general understanding of others.
If you don’t already have a deep understanding of how modern mobile applications are built, tested and distributed – whether native or web based – then this will be something you’re excited to immerse yourself in with appropriate support.
You’ll be open-minded about the best technology to solve a given problem. We work on native mobile apps as well as websites, so we’d expect you to be enthusiastic working with Android, iOS and web. That doesn’t mean you need to be expert in all of them, but if you have a philosophical preference for one platform over others then this opportunity is probably not for you.
We’re looking for someone who is excited to support a team of technologists. This may be your first step into people management, and of course it’d be a bonus if you’re already experienced in management, even if it is at a less senior level. You may have been supporting people as a mentor or in a senior technical role on projects. We’re ready for this to be a step up for you and we will support you every step of the way.
Regardless of experience, you must be equally able to inspire and challenge. We have a very supportive culture, and part of that is knowing when and how to have a difficult conversation. These are difficult skills and instincts to learn and even harder to master, so in a way we consider all leaders in the business to be a work in progress.
You’ll have experience working with modern tooling, for example dependency management, as well as an advocate for appropriate automation and you will know how to support teams in making the hard trade-offs.
While it’s not necessary for you to have worked in an agency environment, you will have a keen commercial sense and will be comfortable presenting to audiences of all seniorities, including very senior technical and non-technical stakeholders. You’ll know how to communicate difficult technical and non-technical concepts in an engaging and comprehensible way.
Sadly, we have concluded that this role is not suitable for remote workers, so you will be expected to work the vast majority of the time from our Shoreditch studio.
We always seek to run a fair, transparent, challenging yet kind recruitment process where even unsuccessful candidates have a valuable experience. You should expect this to be a thorough process given the seniority of the role, but we we will work hard to make it as efficient as possible working with your schedule wherever we can.
We welcome applications from outside of the UK and would contribute to relocation for the right candidate.
If you have any questions you would like to clarify before the process, or maybe recommend someone, please don’t hesitate and contact Juan Delgado at juan ustwo com.
